This exhibition highlights issues of migration and inequality within the African continent. As an artist from South Africa, I aim to share Africa's untold stories with the people of Shirahama and Japan through my artworks, expressed from my personal perspective.

本展では、人と社会の「移動」や「不平等」により生まれた、アフリカ大陸の文化的遺産に焦点を当てています。南アフリカ出身のアーティストとして、アフリカの知られざる物語と社会問題を、自分の視点を通した絵画表現により、白浜と日本のみなさんに伝えられたらと思います。


Location

INTRODUCTION





This exhibition reflects the untold realities of the African continent, presented through the perspective of someone born and raised in South Africa. While South Africa doesn’t experience displacement, conflict, or child labour in the same way as other parts of Africa, I’ve met individuals who have fled to my country seeking refuge from war, political persecution, and economic hardship.


Their stories of resilience and survival deeply moved me and inspired this exhibition. Through this collection, I aim to share these themes with Japanese audiences, many of whom may not know much about Africa beyond the surface. By exploring its darker realities alongside its cultural richness and strength, I hope to encourage empathy, foster understanding, and create a meaningful dialogue about the complexities of this remarkable continent.

本展は、南アフリカで生まれ育った私の視点を通じて、アフリカ大陸の語られていない現実を反映しています。南アフリカは他のアフリカの地域ほど避難、紛争、児童労働を経験していないかもしれませんが、私の国に戦争、政治的迫害、経済的苦境から逃れてきた人々に出会った経験があります。彼らの回復力と生存への物語に深く感銘を受け、この展覧会のきっかけとなりました。


このコレクションを通じて、多くの日本の観客に、アフリカについて表面的な知識を超えたテーマを伝えたいと考えています。アフリカの暗い現実とともに、その文化的豊かさや力強さを探求することで、共感を促し、理解を深め、この素晴らしい大陸の複雑さについて意義深い対話を生み出すことを目指しています。

DISPLACED SERIES | 難民シリーズ





With this mini-series, I wanted to express the difficult situation that refugees around the world are in. Recently, the number of refugees has been increasing due to wars, natural disasters, and economic downturns. I feel most sorry for the children.


このミニシリーズで、世界中の難民が置かれている苦しい状況を表現したいと思いました。最近、戦争、自然災害、経済の低迷などにより、難民の数が増えています。 子供たち一番かわいそう。​



DISPLACED SERIES | 難民シリーズ





These images depict the quiet strength and enduring resilience of those displaced by conflict and crisis—stories of survival, loss, and the relentless search for a place to call home. In Africa, over 30 million people are currently displaced due to conflict, persecution, and climate-related disasters, making the continent home to some of the largest displaced populations globally.


Can you imagine being forced to leave your home, the people you love, and the place where you grew up? To abandon everything familiar because of war, violence, or severe economic collapse? Picture yourself in their shoes—what would it take to carry on with your daily life while fleeing, with nothing but the hope of safety to sustain you? This is the pressing reality faced by millions across the world today. Please take a moment to reflect on their stories and the weight of their journey.



DISPLACED SERIES | 難民シリーズ





これらの作品は、紛争や危機によって家を追われた人々の静かな強さと不屈の回復力を描いています。生き抜き、喪失を抱え、それでもなお“故郷”を探し続ける姿です。アフリカでは現在、3000万人以上が紛争や迫害、気候変動による災害の影響で避難を余儀なくされており、同地域は世界最大規模の避難民を抱える場所となっています。


想像してみてください。突然、住み慣れた家や愛する人々、大切な思い出が詰まった故郷を、紛争や深刻な経済危機のために離れなければならない状況を。戦争や暴力、厳しい経済状況のために、何もかもを失い、逃げるしか選択肢がないとしたら、あなたはどうしますか？日々の生活をどのように続けていきますか？これは、今この瞬間も世界中で何百万人もの人々が直面している厳しい現実です。彼らの立場に立ち、彼らが背負う重みについて、ぜひ思いを巡らせてみてください。



DEFENDERS | 守る者たち





The Defender Series portrays individuals shaped by conflict, embodying both protectors and survivors. These figures stand as symbols of the millions across Africa who have been thrust into armed struggles to defend their lands, livelihoods, and communities from external and internal threats. Their faces reflect strength, resilience, and the burden of sacrifice—a story shared by many who have had no choice but to fight for survival in the face of overwhelming adversity.


Africa has been home to some of the world’s most enduring conflicts, from civil wars to resource-driven battles. These conflicts have displaced millions, while those who stay often take up arms to protect what remains of their homes and heritage. The men in this series are both defenders and reminders of the human cost of such violence.


In the context of this exhibition, I ask viewers to consider: What would you do to defend your home? Would you have the courage to stand firm in the face of chaos? Through their gaze, I hope to challenge you to see the personal stakes behind every conflict and to honour the resilience of those fighting for their place in the world.



DEFENDERS | 守る者たち





このシリーズは、紛争によって形作られた個人を描き、彼らは保護者であり生存者でもあります。このシリーズの人物たちは、外部や内部の脅威から自らの土地や生活、そしてコミュニティを守るために戦闘に追いやられた、アフリカ中の何百万人もの象徴として立っています。その表情には、強さ、回復力、そして犠牲の重さが刻まれています。それは、圧倒的な逆境に直面しながらも、生き残りのために戦わざるを得なかった多くの人々が共有する物語です。


アフリカは、内戦から資源を巡る戦争に至るまで、世界で最も長引く紛争の舞台となってきました。 これらの紛争は何百万人もの人々を故郷から追いやり、残った人々は家や文化を守るために武器を取ることを余儀なくされます。

このシリーズの男性たちは、防衛者であると同時に、こうした暴力の人間的な代償を思い出させる存在でもあります。

Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005)

CHILD LABOUR | 児童労働





I shed light on the harsh realities faced by millions of children across Africa who are forced into labour under brutal conditions. The innocence of childhood is stripped away as these young individuals bear the weight of tools far heavier than their years, their hands hardened by toil and their futures stolen by necessity. I aim to capture not only their struggle but also their resilience and quiet strength.


Child labour is a widespread crisis, with over 92 million children engaged in some form of work across Africa, many in hazardous industries such as mining, agriculture, and construction. These images depict the stark environments and the emotional toll of a life spent working instead of learning or playing.


Since moving to Japan, I have been struck by how fortunate Japanese children are—how well-protected they are, surrounded by safety and the opportunity to learn and grow. This stark contrast serves as a reminder of the world's inequalities. Why must children bear such heavy burdens? What kind of circumstances lead to such realities? Most importantly, how can we build a future where all children have the right to be free to learn, dream, and grow? I hope you are inspired to reflect and take action toward creating a world where every child can live with dignity and hope.

このシリーズは、過酷な状況のもとで労働を強いられているアフリカの数千万人の子どもたちが直面している厳しい現実にスポットライトを当てています。彼らは、年齢に見合わない重い道具を手にし、幼い手は労働で硬くなり、必要に迫られて未来を奪われてしまうのです。この作品を通じて、私は彼らの苦しみだけでなく、その中に見える回復力や静かな強さも描きたいと思っています。


アフリカでは、9,200万人以上の子どもたちが何らかの形で労働に従事しています。その多くが採掘、農業、建設業など危険な環境で働いており、学びや遊びといった子どもらしい時間を失っています。これは単なる統計ではなく、ひとりひとりの人生であり、夢が奪われた子どもたちの現実です。この画像では、その厳しい環境と、彼らの心に刻まれる影響を描いています。


日本に移住してから、私は日本の子どもたちがいかに恵まれているかに驚かされました。安全に守られ、学び、成長する機会に囲まれた環境は、決して当たり前ではありません。この鮮烈な対比は、世界に存在する不平等を改めて思い起こさせるものです。


この作品を通じて鑑賞者の皆様に問いかけたいのです。なぜ、子どもたちがこれほどの重荷を背負わなければならないのでしょうか？ 子どもたちが自由に学び、夢を描き、遊びの中で成長できる未来を築くために、私たちは何をすべきなのでしょうか。すべての子どもたちが「子どもらしく」いられる権利を持つ世界を実現するための行動を、共に考えていただけたら幸いです。



A SMALL PRAYER | 小さな祈り





I wanted to highlight the contrasts that shape so many lives in Africa — the stark disparity between wealth and poverty, abundance and struggle. The collage of currency notes represents the global flow of money and resources, often controlled by systems that leave many behind. The images tell the stories of individuals navigating these imbalances, their resilience a testament to the human spirit.


A young girl is at the piece's heart, her hands clasped in prayer, surrounded by yellow boxes symbolising hope, health, peace, and love. She embodies a quiet yet powerful plea — a small prayer for safety, stability, and a better tomorrow. Close by is a joyful little boy, his red heart a symbol of the continent’s spirit, running towards "better days for us all." He represents the life, strength, and hope that persist, even in the harshest of conditions.


This artwork is my reflection on the resilience of Africans and the potential for change. It is a reminder that amidst hardship, there is a deep-seated aspiration for a brighter future — a vision that continues to inspire me daily.

A SMALL PRAYER | 小さな祈り





この作品を制作するにあたって、私はアフリカにおける生活を形作る対照的な現実を描きたかったのです — 豊かさと貧困、富の多さと苦闘の間に広がる深い格差です。通貨のコラージュは、資金や資源の世界的な流れを表現するとともに、多くの人々を取り残す仕組みを象徴しています。白黒の画像は、その不均衡の中で生き抜く人々の物語を映し出し、彼らの回復力は人間の精神を物語っています。


作品の中心には、一人の少女がいます。彼女は手を合わせて祈りを捧げており、その頭の周りには黄色い箱が並び、「希望」「健康」「平和」「愛」といった言葉が添えられています。彼女の姿は、静かでありながらも力強い願い — 安全、安定、そしてより良い明日への「小さな祈り」を象徴しています。その隣には、喜びに満ちた少年がいます。赤いハートはこの大陸の精神を象徴しており、「すべての人にとってのより良い日々」へ向かって走り出しています。彼は厳しい状況の中でも生きる力、強さ、そして希望を表しています。


この作品は人間の精神の回復力と変化の可能性を私なりに表現したものです。困難の中でも、より良く、公正な未来への深い願望が存在する — その希望は、私に日々インスピレーションを与え続けています。

BLOOD MONEY | 血塗られた富





For as long as I can remember, the African continent has been exploited on an unimaginable scale. From Europe in the West, Asia in the East, North America in the North, and even selfish African leaders, everyone has taken from Africa whilst the average African has barely seen the crumbs. Despite our land being rich in natural resources, diversity, and history, it has benefited the rest of the world far more than its people. In exchange for things of intrinsic value, we’ve been given worthless money.


Blood Money I is a mixed-media artwork I created in 2021 to shed light on Africa’s history of slavery and exploitation. From looted art in Western museums to child soldiers, oil wells draining our lands, and forced labourers, it’s all captured in this piece. I replaced the shape of Africa with currencies from around the globe, symbolizing the financial wealth others have built from our continent’s suffering.


This artwork is also deeply personal. To honour the millions lost during the Middle Passage, I mixed 50 millilitres of my blood with ocean water and ink, using it in this project as a tribute to my ancestors. Swarovski crystals and gold foil represent the gems plundered by corporations but also glimmer as a sign of hope. The pearlescent blue adds a sombre tone, enhancing the pain in each image.


Every element tells a story—a story of suffering, grief, and resilience. My wish is for as many of you as possible to see this piece in person one day.

BLOOD MONEY | 血塗られた富





私が物心ついた頃から、アフリカ大陸は想像を絶する規模で搾取されてきました。西からはヨーロッパ、東からはアジア、北からは北米、さらには利己的なアフリカの指導者たちも加わり、すべての者がアフリカから利益を奪い去りながら、平均的なアフリカ人はその恩恵の一片すら味わえないのが現実です。自然資源や多様性、歴史、文化に富んだこの地は、私たち自身よりもむしろ世界の他の国々を潤してきました。価値あるものと引き換えに与えられたのは、何の意味も持たない金銭だけでした。


Blood Money I は、2021年に制作したミクストメディア作品で、アフリカの歴史、奴隷制、搾取にスポットライトを当てています。ヨーロッパやアメリカの博物館に収蔵されている略奪された芸術品から、子どもの兵士、資源を搾取する油田、強制労働に従事させられる労働者まで、すべてをこの作品に込めました。アフリカ大陸の形を、お金で置き換えました。これは、世界中の国々がアフリカから築いた経済的富を象徴しています。


この作品は私にとって非常に個人的なものでもあります。中間航路で命を落とした数百万の祖先を追悼するため、50ミリリットルの私自身の血液を海水とインクと混ぜ、このプロジェクトに使用しました。スワロフスキーのクリスタルや金箔は、多国籍企業によって略奪された宝石を象徴すると同時に、私たちの地の未来への希望の輝きでもあります。真珠のような青色は、作品の哀愁を強調し、画像に込められた痛みを一層引き立てます。

KGETHI IN BLUE | 青のケティちゃん





Kgethi in Blue holds a special place in my heart, as it features my baby niece, Kgethi. Every time I look at her and interact with her, I am reminded of the pure, boundless joy and potential that every child carries within them. Her laughter is contagious, her energy unstoppable, and her presence a beacon of hope.


This piece is a celebration of that joy and a reminder of what we are striving for—a world where every child can thrive, unhindered by the struggles that often surround them. As the final piece in this exhibition, Kgethi’s bright smile and vibrant energy invite us all to leave with optimism, inspired to create a future filled with love, opportunity, and happiness for all children.


Through Kgethi in Blue, I hope to share not just her joy, but the belief that, no matter how heavy the challenges we face, the light and spirit of the next generation can lead us toward brighter days.

この作品は、私の心に特別な存在として刻まれています。この作品に描かれているのは、私の姪であるケティです。彼女を見つめ、触れ合うたびに、すべての子どもが持つ純粋で無限の喜びと可能性を思い出します。彼女の笑い声は人を元気にし、そのエネルギーは尽きることがなく、その存在は希望の象徴です。


この作品は、そんな喜びを祝福し、そして私たちが目指している世界を思い起こさせるものです—すべての子どもが周囲の困難に縛られることなく、自分の可能性を存分に発揮できる未来です。本展覧会の最後を飾るこの作品は、ケティの明るい笑顔と溢れるエネルギーを通じて、楽観的な気持ちを抱き、愛と機会、そして幸福に満ちた未来を共に築いていこうと皆様を励まします。


この作品を通じて、彼女の喜びだけでなく、次世代の光と精神が私たちをより良い日々へと導いてくれるという信念を共有したいと願っています。



NOK TERRACOTTA | ノクのテラコッタ





African masks are far more than artistic creations; they are sacred objects, deeply woven into the cultural, spiritual, and social fabric of their communities. Masks like this one represent ancestral spirits, deities, or natural forces, serving as bridges between the physical and spiritual worlds. Their use in ceremonies and rituals embodies identity, and storytelling, connecting generations through tradition.


Many of Africa's most significant artefacts, including masks like this one, are housed in Western museums such as the British Museum, the Louvre, and institutions in Germany, Belgium, and the United States. Stolen from their communities during colonialism, these objects were stripped of their sacred context and presented as aesthetic curiosities. Their theft highlights the enduring legacy of exploitation and the need for restitution. Displaying these masks is a call to honour their origins and stories while questioning the systems that allowed their removal.

アフリカの仮面は、単なる芸術作品ではありません。それは、コミュニティの文化的、精神的、社会的な織物に深く結びついた神聖なオブジェです。このような仮面は、祖先の霊、神々、あるいは自然の力を象徴し、物理的な世界と精神的な世界をつなぐ橋として機能します。儀式や祭礼で使用されるこれらの仮面は、敬意、アイデンティティ、そして深い物語を体現し、世代を超えて伝統をつなぐ役割を果たしています。


アフリカの重要な文化財の多くは、この仮面のように、西洋の博物館に収蔵されています。例えば、大英博物館、ルーヴル美術館、ドイツ、ベルギー、アメリカ合衆国のさまざまな機関です。植民地時代にコミュニティから盗まれたこれらのオブジェは、本来の神聖な文脈を剥奪され、単なる美術品として扱われました。その盗難は、搾取の歴史を物語ると同時に、グローバルな反省と文化財返還の必要性を浮き彫りにしています。
